Re-Hire Yourself

Posted July 24, 2009

I love to influence leaders. I have heard on several occasions TD Jakes say that he loves speaking to church leaders because he’s not just influencing them, he’s influencing those they influence. I think this is why I love the Deacons at The MET so much. Yes, I’ve heard the horror stories of of staff/deacon relations in other churches before, but that is not the case at The MET. We have a godly group of men who are truly called to serve. Every time I get to be with this group of leaders, I’m encourged and tonight is one of those times.

I’m preparing for that time tonight and ran across a podcast a buddy of mine sent me from Andy Stanley on Assumptions.

Andy references a key quote in this podcast from a speech he delivered at a recent Drive Conference.

If we got kicked out and the board brought in a new CEO, what would he do? Why shouldn’t we walk out the door, come back in, and do it ourselves? – Andy Grove, CEO Intel

Great perspective. Ultimately our calling as pastors and leaders forces this kind of thinking. Why? Because we’re all accountable.

From a practical perspective (stay with me on the surface level merits of this), church leaders and pastors are hired to lead an organization to accomplish an objective. We lead and manage a non-profit organization with defined goals, employees, budgeting issues, staffing wins and losses, etc. and are paid a salary to do so. We are expected to be competent leaders. We are accountable to accomplish that which we are hired to do, namely the mission in each church’s unique local context.

From a biblical perspective (which really trumps all else) we are called of God through personal health and holiness to shepherd his bride, the local church, to its full redemptive potential. We provide spiritual leadership in serving the almighty creator, lover of our souls, bridegroom to the Church. We are accountable to accomplish the mission.

The interesting tension many leaders find themselves in what to do when a program, strategy, or system is not producing the results to truly accomplish the mission, yet many already established within the church love that paradigm…

To be blunt, in my opinion the tension with many church leaders is how to navigate and lead change without upsetting the apple cart, resulting in a decrease in giving through disgruntled stakeholders. The local church in America today requires significant funding to maintain, and I’m not disparaging that. Scripture abounds that addresses how we are to manage our financial resources to fund the local church.

The question is how do we point people back to the mission of why we exist in the first place by anchoring the vision of what God has called us to do? Make no mistake. We are all accountable. The real question is, to whom?

Leader, sooner or later your stewardship is going to be called in to question with a “well done” or a “we’re making a change.” My challenge to you is to get centered on the mission and purpose of your life and re-hire yourself.
